Commercial Acting

All actors can be sorted into a type or character type. Type is generally the persons look, personality or uniqueness that set them apart from the rest. Type really comes into play with commercial acting because you aren’t selling yourself but rather a product. Interestingly enough commercial acting is not about skill rather than fitting into a niche. Actually, can be one of the easiest forms of acting to get work in and the opportunity is limitless especially for those with a unique look. A lot of roles doing even require you to speak, you just need to make the right facial expressions, dance or simply smile.

Depending on current trends and interests; commercial acting is always changing and evolving. The possibilities are endless, and these jobs take very little time to perform. The typical shoot for commercials can take only two days and usually pays about an average of $2,000 with residuals added on. Every time a commercial is aired the actor is paid what they call residual payments. Residuals can be a great bit of income depending on how long the commercial runs on television.

One great thing about commercial acting is you do not have to live in a big city like Los Angeles or New York to find work but can find work in just about every city around the country. While local commercials don’t pay as well at nationally aired ones; they are still a fantastic way to get experience and add to your resume before you try to pursue bigger jobs like gigs in television or film. Even famous actors had to start somewhere, and a lot started in commercials.

You can improve your chances to book commercials by taking acting classes that are specialized for commercial acting. Though you may not have to memorize lines for this type of acting you have to be able to portray many different emotions and direction from the director. Acting classes will teach you the best methods for doing exactly that. With good training you will find booking a job much easier and you will be more at ease with auditions.

A lot of times there are hundreds of actors that are auditioning for the same commercial and they don’t approach the audition with the same professional standards they would a movie audition. This can be a huge folly as just booking on commercial can give you the means to live for an entire year; not to mention the experience necessary to audition for roles that may be a bit more to your liking. Be professional and have patience and don’t be afraid to audition for as many commercial acting jobs as you can muster. Eventually you will match up with a great role!
